Lynn University expands relationship with Palm Beach County Victim Services
Palm Beach County Victim Services is dedicated to the elimination of sexual violence and provides an array of services.
The division has provided professional services to local schools and colleges for several years. Lynn University in Boca Raton started collaborating with them four years ago to raise awareness and provide training opportunities, and the two parties recently agreed to expand their relationship to help prevent sexual assaults on campus and in the community.
“Our extended collaboration enhances our ability to share best practices through impactful educational opportunities and training to the rest of the community,” said Sharon Daugherty, the division’s sexual assault response coordinator. “We already are seeing interest from and are coordinating with other schools who have participated in our joint events, like the recent Campus Round-up.”
The Campus Round-up is a new program to connect sexual assault response teams to share resources.
Lorna Fink, compliance officer/Title IX coordinator at Lynn, proposed the relationship when she joined the university about a year ago.
“Our goal is awareness and prevention, and as educators, we help empower individuals to make smart decisions and take responsible actions,” Fink said. “Lynn has always provided seminars on sexual misconduct and gender discrimination for staff and students and has offered bystander intervention training for several years.”
Starting this fall, the university will embed sexual assault awareness and prevention into its “Dialogues of Self and Society” courses.
Daugherty said that in addition to training, university partnerships also include trauma-related services, such as confidential crisis intervention, counseling information and referral and accompaniment to medical and legal services. The department can also provide support in filing complaints or reports to law enforcement or campus organizations.
“We also have a memorandum of understanding with Palm Beach State College,” Daugherty said. “Other schools we are coordinating with are Everglades, Florida Atlantic University, Keiser, Livingstone, Northwood, Palm Beach Atlantic and [public schools].”
